on www.fpgaarcade.com in the vice-20 / pacman project there is a tool +
source for generating VHDL blockrams with init attributes. Might help.

You'd be looking for the Xilinx tool called data2bram.. It comes as
part of ISE

Here's a very helpful document about it, strangely not linked on the
Xilinx website (I found it with google). It's similar to the ISE doco,
but has more detail:
