Battery Polarity Question

I have recntly purchased second hand a hand held scanner. It runs off 6 AA
batteries and I also have a transformer to run it from my home power to save
batteries. There is a socket to run it off my 12 volt car battery also, but
someone told me that I needed to make sure I had it set at the correct
polarity.

Can someone explain to me what polarity means and the implications of
connecting and having the wrong polarity setting.

Is there a way to test/find out the correct polarity for this scanner as
there is nothing on the unit itself.

I would be appreciative of someones help in this matter.

** Wrong polarity often means damage to or destruction of the item
concerned.

It is just a matter of getting the + and - the right way
around.



Is there a way to test/find out the correct polarity for this scanner as
there is nothing on the unit itself.

** No non technical ways exist except to contact the makers and ask.

If by "transformer" you mean AC adaptor, then get a friend with a
multimeter to measure the output of the adaptor. This should tell you
the voltage, whether it is AC or DC (most probably DC), and should
also indicate the polarity. Then match up the polarity of your car
cigarette lighter adaptor, or whatever power source you are using. Of
course I'm assuming that the AC adaptor and car battery adaptor both
connect to the same socket on your scanner.
