Hello group...
I recently got an Avanti C503R portable TV set at a hamfest with a nearly
new and perfectly functional Compaq monitor. It's a nice little TV with a
color picture and an AM/FM radio...and the price was certainly right on.
The picture is good and bright, with decent if light color. However, the
radio section is dead silent on both bands. When in radio mode the power LED
lights up on the front of the set and a small click comes from the speaker
at power on...but no sound ever comes from the set. I discovered by accident
that moving the tuner on the TV set would "knock out" the reception of a
little portable radio playing across the table on the same station I was
setting the TV to.
The TV tuner also seems to lack sensitivity, especially on UHF. VHF stations
are difficult to get. I have connected an external antenna that usually
gives a decent picture for all local channels and that makes no difference.
If I feed a signal into the set via its composite video input, the picture
and sound are excellent.
I am guessing that something is wrong with the tuner in the set...but I
really don't know for sure where to look or how exactly to get the set apart
properly. I'd like it if a tech or someone with experience could guide me to
fix this...or even recommend a good shop around Bloomington, Illinois to get
the little set properly repaired. It would seem a shame to throw it out as
it seems like a nice set and new ones with color screens are certainly
expensive!
Thanks in advance for any help!
