“Australia’s entrepreneurs have long lamented that if you really want to create a successful global technology startup
that you have to leave Australia and go to Silicon Valley. It’s just too hard to do startups in Australia, they say. The
market is too small, there’s no big tech companies doing real product development here (it’s just Sales and Marketing),
the government doesn’t support tech startups well enough … Well guess what? I think that the tide has turned and that
Australia is about to become one of the next hotspots for startups.”

There was a 'background briefing' on ABC a couple of years ago on, IIRC, the
growing power of the search engines. A goon from Sensis stated that Sensis
was going to get influentual enough to overpower and outrate google.

Oh goodie. Does that mean we get to have another bust after his one
dies too?

Yep, that is why we see senis maps everywhere online.
Sigh, not a chance as Sensis is run by Telstra and we know how they
price gouge

The first one was a hoot.
Many people learned that share prices can always get lower - to ZERO!
People's impression of that surprised me too, even if on stock prices
alone. They all acknowledge that you win some, you lose some, but on
average, you're "guaranteed" to win.

My take on tech boom was, in the day, anyone who said anything with the
word "computer" in it, meant huge quantities of money. Investors
finally got fed up with feeding money into ventures that appeared to be
going no-where, and, since said ventures became structured to use new
investors as a source of income (they weren't doing anything productive
themselves) they went bust. Shock horror, didn't see that one coming.

Did anyone learn anything from this? I don't think so. Perhaps
they're still smarting from that last hit and might be a little more
cautious, but I don't think they've learned anything.

Reminds me of a job I was offered once (during the first boom) at a
small design firm designing web terminals for hotel rooms.
The owner swore he was going to be worth more than Bill Gates, he'd
done the numbers...
And I could get in on it with massive share options being the 3rd
employee.

What was their name again...?
Oh, that's right, something like Never Even Made a Blip Pty Ltd

Dave.

This sort of event occurs about every decade. Probably started happening
with the first stock exchange. There are a continual supply of suckers
that fail tohead past experiences of other people.

And don't they really get pissed when you say "I'll take the wages
instead please".

The thing that irks me about stock, is that it's inherently a failed
business model.

You need a bucketload of money (someone else's) to start, and with that
alone, you make money, all the while replacing the stuff you borrowed to
do it. Aside from that, you provide no service, you provide no product,
and you have no clients.

All you need is steady stream of suckers to keep pouring money in. And
the longer you keep giving back that money (with a bit of interest) the
suckers keep coming back, not realising that this inherently unstable
model is destined to fall over every so often, and only the suckers lose
out.

Having no product wastage, no service obliged to supply, having no
clients to disappoint, AND having the government bail you out every time
you crash is one very sweet deal.
