aus.electronics group policy

Does there exist and if so where, a document with the guidelines for
aus.electronics? The reason I ask is that I might have a few ebay auctions
coming up of interest but I have no desire to spam the list.

Cheers

I don't think this is acceptable in any newsgroup except for aus.forsale.

I dont know I think that should generally be fine provided :

The message Title makes it clear it is for stuff for sale so starting the
Title with say FS should be fine
so for Example 'FS - Ebay BWD 820 CRO' would be acceptable whereas 'BWD 820
CRO' would not. This means that anyone browsing the Newsgroup can see from
the message title that the message is about something for sale and choose
not to read it.

The goods for sale are something that is relevant to the Newsgroup so since
this is aus.electronics auctions for Electronic test equipment and
electronic components would be fine however Auctions for TVs, Fridges and
Pornography would not be acceptable.

You keep your Ads/Postings to a minimum. one or two Postings every now and
then are not likely to upset anyone however ten posts a day for a week are
going to really piss people off.

You list related Items in one message don't list ten items individually in
an attempt to maximise your visibility on the Newsgroup as this will flood
the Newsgroup with messages and really annoy people.

Dont keep listing the same items on the Newsgroup for sale every week if the
item does not sell then it is a fair bet no-one was particularly interested
the first time - the denizens of the newsgroup do not really change in a
hurry - if no-one was interested last week then there is a good chance
no-one is interested this week.

Try and participate in other discussions - this can give you more
credibility if you stick to topics you are familiar with and let people get
to know you.

Most of this is really common sense and if you are careful not to annoy
people then posting messages like that is fine. I know this goes against all
the well disproven theories justifying SPAM. But basically what it amounts
to is if you are careful not to annoy people and join in the group then
people are generally not to fussed.

If otoh you annoy people the best response they will give will be to block
you and ignore your messages.

BTW it seems that SPAM annoys people so much that the only products
successfully marketed by spam Porn web sites ....

Sorry should be FA (For Auction) not FS (For Sale) .... ;-)

While I don't know the official policy on the group and posting rules
- or even if there is an offical FAQ or charter for this group,

To my personal view - someone who is a regular participant on the
groups core subject, posting the sale of private goods relevant to
the group's subject, making clear in the header that its a "for
sale/auction" and doing it as a "one off" wouldn't worry me at all.

However I cant speak for the others here.

Others have occasionally posted here in the past offering to sell or
give away items like boxes of components and gear from workshop clear
ups, back issues of EA mags etc and it seems to have not caused a
problem on the group.

That is kinda my view as well, as long as its prefaced with 'FA' or
something obvious and is not a regular thing I see no great drama. I have
given EA mags away using aus.elec and I don't think I'll make a fortune on
ebay especially at "crazy mike's" bargain prices ;).

I was going to say exactly the same thing. I agree with Richard, this
seems to be pretty much the accepted unwritten rule within the group.
Of course, now watch all the net-cops come out of the closet and quote
all the "offical" rules from usenet in general etc :->
Maybe I should have top posted this? =:->
There has never been an official FAQ or guideline for aus.electronics

I think you will find that using newsgroups to promote auctions
contravenes Ebay's own guidelines. In any case you will find that many
(most?) people object to commercial postings in groups not
specifically set up for this. Stick to the aus.ads groups and you will
annoy the least number of people.

Hello Mike and Frank,
I have bought a couple of items from a chap called Ben who
advertised them on this group. A little frequency meter and an
old BWD CRO. The CRO was faulty and with the help of
a scan of the circuit diagram from Phil Allison it is now working
fine. To me that is the group working well. I like that.

I am interested to see what Mike has for sale.

There are hardly enough posts on this group as it is so we
can't afford to stifle any that have an electronic flavour.

There was an attempt to gag a fellow called Dontronics a while
ago. I must admit that I never understood what he was selling
because his descriptions were so brief. The man was probably
trying to keep his post short to satisfy his critics and his short
advertisements didn't explain much to newbies like me.
I still don't know what the hell a simm stick is and how it would
benefit me in general hobby electronics but I am sure some
people benefited from his products and had fun. I would have
preferred a description of the products and their uses in a post
and not to go digging around his web site, but that is just me..

If you are not "having fun" Frank, stop what your doing and
have a wee think. Life is good and it is short.

Nice to see a group effort on the HP component number cross
references. Good work guys!
