I thought that our old Aussie top loader was crap reliability
after 8 years when the gearbox failed (a sales manager for the
company whom is also a friend said that they were designed for
7 year life in the late 80's), but the Asko 10505 front loader
has had 1 pump go, motor fail with the armature wires flying
off, 1 motor brush wearing out in 2 years, and now a second
pump go after 2 years since replacement. The machine is about
5 1/2 years old. I bought this Swedish POS 'cos ppl kept
saying to you have to buy European to get a good front loader.
Christ knows how it would have gone if we had it a few years
earlier when nappy loads were a twice a day occurence! I think
we will just go out and buy an LG now.

I just got a new Whirlpool front loader, they have a 5 year warranty
until Nov or Dec. Made in Italy, or you can pay extra for the model
that is made in Germany.
Haven't installed it yet though, so have yet to try it out, but the 5
year warranty sold me.
The Whirlpool also uses a lot less water (60L) than other brands,
another thing to consider.

Dave :)

It's a case of you have a duff one, I have an Asko 10504 bought in 1995 and
still going strong.

My neighbour on the other hand bought the large 9Kilo or something Fisher &
Paykel all electronic, 7 months ago and has so far had, 3 hot valves, 4
control boards and 1 cold valve replaced.

Can't even blame cockroaches, no evidence of them in the brown plastic purse
that the PCB is encaspsulated in.

We got an Asko dish washer, 5 years old. Fixed twice under warranty with
faulty light and door switch. Now just failed again, burnt out PCB, managed
to get a reconditioned replacement board and fitted it myself. Working so
far but if it goes again, it's for the tip.

Also consider an AEG or Miele, while not cheap, they have a very good
reputation and use bugger all water. Used to have a F+P with all its many
faults too. Read in the manual that a standard load uses 180L of water, the
new one we got uses less than 39L on a full load!!!

The AEG ones I looked at did indeed have very low water consuption,
but at twice the price or more of the Whirlpool :(

Well I did say they were not cheap!! The one we got is extremely quiet, can
really only hear when water flows in and when on the high speed spin.. Even
washes woollens... Sorry, sounding like an advert here...

Well the Asko service guy rocked up yesterday and replaced the
outlet pump. "I don't understand it " he says. "This never
happens". I said "yeah, we never tell our service guys to
admit to problems either" He appeared to be a little hurt at
that. I would have replaced the pump myself but Asko won't
release parts to a punter and they wont do good prices for the
local appliance supply place. (a really good bloke from
Peninsula Appliance parts in Frankston)

The guy says we have had a really bad run, what with 2 pumps,
1 motor in 6 years. Last night I pulled the pump motor apart,
this was partially seized, could not find much obviously
wrong. It was an induction motor with small squrrel cage type
rotor. I pulled the rotor out and a lot of wet grease was in
their. The magnetic cct and windings were insulted by virtue
of a plastic moulding which also provides isolation and water
sealing. When I reassembled, the motor ran freely. The motor
cost $55 and service and labour $80 for half hour.

That alone is a good reason to avoid them.

Fuckem.
