Apex volume plateau

My son's Apex TV volume increases incrementally to an approximate midpoint
on the volume scale. However, any further on-screen increase on the volume
bars doesn't affect the actual volume. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks! This newsgroup is amazing. I have fixed a VCR and a TV from advice
on this group, and I'm an amateur. This time I don't know the terms MSB and
D/A. MSB is minimum sideband? D/A is what? And is there any hope to
replace a component or tweak a pot, or is this something for an
oscilloscope....

MSB == most signifigant bit
D/A is a digital to analog convertor.

Unless you have a schematic and can desolder surface mount components, I don't
think you're going to be able to trouble shoot down to the component level.

If I had the thing, I'd connect a VCR to a stereo amp and use the TV only as
a display device.

MSB / Most Significant Bit
D/A / Digital to Analog converter often called a DAC, opposite is ADC.

Basically, the volume IC (D/A) is not receiving the highest weighted
bit (MSB) from the rotary encoder (pot). This may be due to a bad PCB
connection, cold solder joint, or a cracked trace, but perhaps a
defective LSI alas. Good luck.
