APEX AD3201 is it toast?

I have a APEX AD 3201 that was in storage for a year or so and when I took
it out to give a friend found that it wouldn't load Disc.
It would spin up erratically with the "loading "message and after about 45
seconds displayed the message "No disc" I tried several disc with the same
results.
I cleaned all the grease of the moving parts and it would sometimes load
Once it loaded it seemed ok.
When it was having one of its better moments I tried to upgrade the firmware
in the hopes that would help. When I inserted the disc I made it loaded and
got the right prompts so I went for it.
A few seconds later it ejected the disc and I got my "no disc" message
again.
I've powered it off and on several times and aside from the disc spinning
its totally unresponsive
According to the web site this unit is probably useless at this point but
thought I'd see if anybody had any ideas what I could do to avoid adding to
a landfill
Thanks In advance
Bob

Try going there: http://www.nerd-out.com/forum/ Chock full of Apex experts.
They've been helpful when my parent's Apex 1500 wouldn't power up. A $0.25
diode was all it needed.
