I need something like a wifi internet camera that I can mail to my old
man and he can just plug it in and let me see how he's doing. He's 90
and can't deal with that sort of thing anymore.

What I'd like to do is get a wifi camera, program it at home, then ship
it to him so I can see how he is when I'm not there.

He has wifi broadband and I have all the keys and passwords needed to
access it, but I can't be there to actually do any installation so it has
to work plug and play.

Well, you could get an iPad mini 2, set it up with an open webcam application.
It'd just take a mount-to-the-wall and a place to plug in its power adapter.
Costs about a quarter grand, but it'll work regardless of computer on/off cycling.

I have several manufacturer's wifi cams and USB security cams.

1) make sure the cam has full dynamic light range. SOme do not and do
not tell you. Get one for indoor / outdoor (through the window) if not
actually outside.

2) look at Lorex WiFi. some have medium 640 and other 1024 resolution.
caveat -
can use WPS to set up.
you could set up at your home then ship and do WPS install (that is
all you need is push WPS on the ROuter and WPS on the cam and you are
done).
too many cam options to talk about here.
indoor only models will work in room or looking out the window
make sure the WiFi router is close to the camera.
Also, and most important, make sure the internet service upload speed
is sufficient otherwise you will get no connects and/or poor
connections that will drive you up the wall. You can change the data
transmission rate but you still need really good internet upload speed.
I originall had the standard internet install and nothing but problems
viewing remotely. I now have 5Mb/sec upload and it has great viewing
on four WiFi cams simultaneously on a PC. On the smartphone the old
internet way I could barely get one wifi cam to connect and display at
a very slow rate if it would even connect. I cannot stress this
enough, you need really good, say 5Mb/sec, upload at the WiFi cam end.

3) I highly recommend that a small UPS be used to power the WiFi router
and the WiFi cam.

These Lorex wifi cams allow talking (audio) in both directions but you
will need a regular powered speaker to plug into the wifi cam.

You will be able to view any of your remote cams on you smart phone or
on your PC/Laptop using LView (make sure you get v1.0.10 (or if
available later version). This LView allows digital zoom.

Watch for them going on sale to save big bucks! That is how I
purchased mine.

When looking through a window some of the cams with the night vision IR leds
will not work at night with the IR leds turned on. The lights hit the
window and bounce back and blind the camera.
