Anyone else having trouble with this group using Eternal Sep

I normally use Thunderbird to post here, connected using Eternal September's free UseNet server. However at the moment, this group (and no others) seems to have issues downloaded the content of the messages. All I get is headers. Anyone else having problems?

Hmmm... The problem goes away when I turn off secure connection
and use port 119 instead. Strange that the other news groups
didn't have the same issue, though.

No problem here. But then I'm using port 119. :)

I think it must have been a glitch in my Tbird installation. I
rebooted after changing to use port 119, and when it came up I
was asked for a user name for connection. I changed the settings
back to using SSL and port 563, and now everything works again
with no requests for user name or password. Go figure.

T-bird is not without its glitches. Mine has periodic delays in
responsiveness that I don't see in other programs, so I'm assuming it is
T-bird and not the computer. An older version wouldn't update itself
and ended up quite out of date. I eventually downloaded and reinstalled
a new version. Still not sure if it is updating or not, can't remember
it happening. The every once in a while it complains that something is
messed up with the stored messages and has to download them all again.
That takes a while. There are others...

I turned off SSL in November altogether. As I recall it was because
suddenly I was unable to connect to the server at all with SSL. That
seems to be the case still.

Well, duh! It's *always* September isn't it??? There's your problem... ;)

I think this may be something to do with more recent ThunderBird and
possibly other readers. At work I'm still using TB 2.0.0.24 and
SSL works fine (again). At home I'm on the latest TB update and
need to use port 119. I think there's something that the newer
code doesn't like ("trusted" certificate?) about Eternal September's
credentials.

Whatever it was was certainly a TB glitch. After getting it to
work again, I had a constant indication of 45 unread messages that
were not actually there. I had to delete the .msf file to fix
that (rebuild index didn't work).

I fixed my problem with Gnus, I needed to specify TLS explicitly instead
of SSL. I guess Eternal September may have banished SSL since it's
pretty much broken these days.

No idea why it works in old TB but not new though.

I guess I should've said "sometime in September" :) But working now
after specifying TLS explicitly. Server seems a little slow with TLS
though.
