I ordered a (downloadable) service manual for a Viewsonic GS-790 Monitor
from http://service-manuals.net using a credit card on August 25th using a
credit card, but have not received a link yet with which to download the
manual as their website states. Has anybody had any experience with these
people? Have I been ripped off?

Did you use a genuine e-mail addy ??

Unfortunately, you have to call them, and its a toll call as they have no
800 number.

Yes, of course. Thanks for all the replies, everybody.

I just noticed that my original post was incorrect as I actually placed my
order on the 18th of August, not the 25th. I filled out their web based
"contact us" form and I did get a reply stating "According to our terms we
reserve the right till 10 days delay."

Why it takes so long as it's a electronic download, I dunno.

Anyways, I will follow up to the original post if/when I receive the pdf.

As a follow-up, I finally received the link to the .pdf yesterday.
Unfortunately, the Chassis number in the .pdf link they gave me is
incorrect. The link they supplied me was for a GS-790 Chassis
#VCDTS21528-1. The chassis number of the monitor I require is
#VCDTS22336-1M, which I had stated in the web-based request form. SO, I
have let them know of the discrepancy, and am waiting to hear what their
response is. Will followup again when I hear from them.

Just for grins, try editing the address in the link--by a letter or number
or two--and see if you can come up with the correct manual.

If the address contains any numbers/letters which also appear in the model
or chassis number, you might stumble on to it.
Actually, I did think of that and give it a try, but when they send you
the link, they also inform you that the link is good for only three days,
after which they delete it. I'd love to be able to hack the page and
browse it on a daily basis building a nice collection of manuals. I figure
that they're not authorized to sell the copywrited manuals, so they
certainly couldn't complain about theft or anything.

Let's see, if we follow that line of thinking then a drug dealer
should not mind if you steal some of his offerings, right? And the
law should not care either.

Stealing is stealing.

And buying stolen stuff makes you a fence.
In the part of world where I live fencing is punished as hard as theft if not
harder.

A drug dealer most likely paid for his "offerings", so your analogy is
rather clumsy.

In any case, it's not a question of whether they mind or not though, is
it?

Stealing is stealing.
How can you steal something that has no physical substance that no one
paid for? If I went to a website, and saved all the pictures on a given
page, would that be stealing? You might make a case that I'm stealing from
Viewsonic, but when those bastards ludicrously charge 60 bucks for a
service manual (Something that should be available for a low cost if not
free in electronic form) I really have a difficult time feeling any guilt
whatsoever.

The outrage over the price is not a justification for stealing. Your lack
of character is the same whether the manual is $10 or $60. Considering that
you can buy their products for a fraction of what an equivalent product
would have cost a few years ago, it is no wonder that they have to make a
profit on THEIR (not your) documentation.

BTW, property does not necessarily have a physical embodiment. Also, there
are very few things that you could find to steal that no one paid anything
to produce. I suppose by your logic no one should have to pay for software,
other than the price of the media. Have you heard of the concept of a
copyright or patent. Go live in China. Respect for such concepts is on a
par with yours over there. Perhaps you would feel differently if you had
something you thought was worth selling.

Certainly vendors make it much more likely that people will go out of their
way to steal software and documentation when they price it unreasonably.
That, however, is their right.

there is/was a "Sam's Photofacts" operation w/web page some years ago.
lousy service and stupid/inaccurate descriptions, a tech manual cost me
25.00 and was actually just the owners manual. if you are dealing
with that same outfit, good luck(!). --Loren
