Yeah the free sample service was abused a little while ago so I believe they
stopped sending samples to Australia.
Not sure if it was only temporary or not.

What a surprise. It was commonly suggested here in this very forum as a way
to get free IC's, as distinct from its purpsoe as a provider of samples to
developers.

What's the bet. I'm sure if you have a track record of purchases from them
they'd reconsider.

I believe if you email them explaining your situation then they'll usually
send you the samples.

I ordered some samples of 12-bit 165MHz DACs a couple of weeks ago.
I had to send a reason for using them to a local agent, but once that
was cleared, I received them within a couple of days. I am going to
request some ADCs shortly for a major project.

How did you go about doing that, just email the agent directly with an
outline of the project? (which agent did you use?)

When I requested the samples on the Analog Devices website, I was
directed to a contact in Australia. He requested a company name,
project in which the devices will be used, qty per year, etc.

I sent a brief description of the project together with an estimated
number of devices used per year. The estimated number bears no
relation to the actual number that will be used.

It took up just a few minutes of my time, but was a painless process.

If you feel the process is too difficult, Digikey may have the
device(s) you require. They take credit card, and deliver to Australia
within a week.

Note with digikey they may require the same details
depending on the device. Others they will direct you
to the manufacturer.

They aren't allowed to sell some of the dallas maxim chips to Australia.
Can buy them from Dallas maxim no problems
but get slugged with high shipping costs
or go through the hoops with a local distributor.

Some of the Singapore distributors will sell direct with no questions asked
but have high moqs(minimum order quantities).

The reason I was given, was due to compliance with
the new US export laws.

If you need samples email their distributors.
had no troubles from memec with analog devices samples.

Latest time I tried ordering Dallas parts from Digikey was october last
year.

DS89C420 , DS1307Z
supposedly Dallas Maxim and Digikey have an agreement
not to sell any Dallas Maxim products to non North American / UK customers.

Digikey are supposed to tell you to buy from Dallas direct.

For 8051's Dallas aren't the cheapest anyway
winbond , philips or atmel amoung others are a good bit cheaper usually
in small quantities.

eg on
http://tinyurl.com/36jr2
or
http://www.futurlec.com.au/test13.jsp?category=Integrated%20Circuits%20-%20Winbond&category_title=8051%20Type%20Microcontrollers&main_menu=IC&sub_menu=ICM80SERIES
can get 6 W78E516B (40 pin 64KB flash 256b ram, 256b eprom 40MHz for the
same price as one DS89420 33MHz 16KB flash 256b ram 1KB sram for movx)
