A team from Johns Hopkins University recently found that a nonsemiconductor that has long found use as a conductor turns out also to be, in a different orientation, an insulator, with properties useful in constructing MOSFETs. The material, solution-deposited beta alumina, forms when aluminum oxide from solution forms solid layers of crystals.
