Back in the 1970s and 1980s, hi fi and video dealers typically banked
more than 30% gross profit on most things that were sold. Things are
very different today. Dealers are lucky to make 10% GP on most audio and
video equipment. Often, the margin is significantly less. The only
profit centre left for dealers is in small items, like cables and plug
boards.

[Example] I went with a client to JB Hi Fi to pick up an HDMI cable for
his system (I didn't have a spare in my vehicle). JB's cheapest HDMI
cable was $32.00. I pay less than 4 Bucks for the same (identical) cable.

Can't stand driving a washing machine, with little idea when it's going

The only response I have for my Ferrari envy is that the Alfa I drive
was made by the folk who taught Enzo how to. (It actually is an Alfa,
too, from 1969, not a rebadged Fiat)

Yep, and anybody can buy good ones for $5 from many computer shops who
work on tiny margins JB and HN wouldn't dream of. You didn't do your
client a favour by going to JBHiFi for one! I did the exact opposite
when I installed a friends TV, I took the cables JB sold them back and
swapped them for a BluRay player at almost no extra cost, (that's how
silly their pricing is) then bought the same quality cables elsewhere.
Result, very happy friend who only had a DVD player prior to that.

FWIW: I have wandered into my local JB a few times. EVERY SINGLE visit
has been a profoundly disappointing experience. DSE prices blow JB off
the planet. JB staff are largely comprised of morons. When searching for
a sound bar for a client, one idiot cranked the volume well into
clipping and then tried to explain that it was the best sound bar on the
market because it had 'tubes in it'. I ended up recommending a Bose
sound bar to my client. It actually DID sound very good indeed. I cannot

Their sound bars sound OK, but are hellishly overpriced IMO (like
everything Bose makes). You can buy any number of powered monitors that
sound better for less money.

**Really? I've listened to quite a few sound bars. The Bose is not only
best of the lot, but is reasonably priced and dead easy for old farts to
use.

Please note: I am ONLY referring to their sound bars. Nothing else Bose
makes can reasonably compete in the market, sound wise. The sound bars
can, with ease. Companies like LG and Samsung can't build anything
remotely as good for the money.

Also note: I hate Bose. The company spends way too much money on
advertising and not enough on building quality into their products.

Except their sound bars. Not their surround sound systems. Sound bars.

**I'd call it a soundbar, with faults. Bose don't build subwoofers,
despite their constant claims. The regular soundbar is plenty good
enough for most old farts. The extra woofer (it's NOT a subwoofer by any
stretch) just muddies things up. Besides, you're starting to edge into
the territory where a proper surround sound system (not Bose) can be
justified.

to his stereo system (the speakers are either side of the TV), but he
wasn't happy with several aspects of the set-up (including the sound),

so did a little research. They all sounded disgusting. REALLY
disgusting. And, they were not cheap. I was about to give him the bad
news, until I happened to wander into my local DJs. Buried in the corner
I spied the Bose sound bar. I was, naturally, going to walk on by, but,
for some reason, I decided to press the big red button. The damned thing
sounded great. The remote was clearly designed for old farts and the
price was easily competitive. Client purchased one and is very happy.
