Alternative to laser pickup SOH-DP1U?

Hi all,

I am looking for a better alternative to the laser
pickup SOH-DP1U used by many samsung dvd players,
which can be used as a replacement. I have
changed 3 laser pickups in the last 2,5 years,
so SOH-DP1U seems to not be so much reliable :)
Also, does anybody knows if the datasheet of
SOH-DP1U can be found?

Many thanks,

George

I can only suggest something in theory. The laser replacement would have
to meet exact specs both electrically and mechanically. This is going
to be difficult to find, since these are all custom made for the
manufactures of these players.

When changing the laser, did you follow the service manual's
recommendations for the bias current and drive to the laser? If the
drive or bias is too high the laser will not last as long. Also, they
have an estimated number of hours that they would have.

I am not familiar enough with your part number types to comment on
specifics.

Virtually impossible. Certainly impractical.

Thank you all for your replies.
All previous replacements were not done by me, but from
the local service of samsung. I have replaced 2 laser pickups
during the last 2,5 years. I think that the laser
pickup was made by a korean company named
"world telecom" (http://www.worldtelecom.co.kr/english/),
but they don't have any contact way in their site...

The laser pickup I have now fails to read anything
(not only dvd but also audio cd). I somewhat dissasembled
it yesterday and cleaned the lens beneath the upper lens
(that moves) with alcohol. Re-installing the laser pickup
back to the player seems to work again for dvds & audio cds,
but I don't know for how long :) So, perhaps
its design has problems with dust and not with the the laser
itself.

The reason that I spend so much time is that the player costed
800$ when I bought it (a mini audio system with 3 dvd/cd disk
changer, with tunner, 2 decks & 5 amplified channels) and its hard
to replace it :)

Many thanks,

George

Well, you can do a little further than just cleaning the lens (if that
doesn't work anymore).
You can lift plastic cover around the lens, and then you can clean the
lens on both sides. But do this if normal cleaning doesn't work anymore,
and replacement is too expensive.
Would you believe that your replaceemnt lens assemly is around 600 Php,
maybe roughtly 12 US dlrs. here.

Only 12 dollars? They will charge me 120 euros only
(thats more than 120 US dollars) to replace the
part. So cheap...
