Alkaline battery quality going down?

Has anybody noticed an increase in alkaline batteries leaking and
corroding what they are in? I mean standard AA/AAA type batteries.

Over the years, I can't remember ever seeing an alkaline leak. Within
the past few months, I've had about 4 or 5 batteries leak in several
devices (remote controls and a clock)! They were all common brands
(Duracell, Eveready, Ray-O-Vac) and were probably 1-year old or so when
they leaked.

NO..... I can not say that I concur with your observation.
A battery is more apt to leak if it is completely dead or almost dead.....
and if it is in a warm environment. Did you ever notice that the manual
for the equipment or the label near the battery compartment makes a
statement that says to remove batteries if the item is not going to be used
for some time..... 30 days ..... 60 days..... what ever.
I remember quite vividly, right before alkaline batteries were commonly
marketed in the late 60's that battery leakage of the standard carbon/zinc
batteries was a very common occurrence..... alkalines certainly leak a lot
less than that.

I've also noticed this. When alkalines appeared years ago, you never saw one
leak. I've seen lots of leaking alkaline batteries in recent years. My
understanding is that in order to improve capacity, the battery shell is very
thin compared to what it used to be in order to pack in more chemicals.

Same here. Although Energizers are the worst offenders for leakers. I have
had too many Duracells go flat while not being used.

I stopped using duracell as everytime I came to use my torch they were
dead even though it was very rarely used. Stick to everyready
energizers now - no probs.

I've had Ray-O-Vacs leak.

Actually, for equipment with low drain and infrequent use, I prefer
the old zinc-carbon batteries.
While they do leak also, they are less frequent and their leakage is
less damaging.
Problem is, it is kinda hard to get decent zinc-carbon batteries
nowadays.
