AIWA CD player problem

Hello,

I have a AIWA Digital audio system (model CX-NA 303) that quit working
recently.
Everything else (tape, tuner) works except the CD player.
When I turn it on with a cd in there, it tries to read the cd, can't.
Drops out and tries again frequently. I can hear the servo system
trying to spin the disc.
It does thi with all the CD's. One time when the system was trying to
spin the disc I gave a gentle jerk and it started playing the disc! I
removed the CD and spun the disc which holds the CD and it spins
freely.
I have carefully cleaned the laser lens and lubricated (with oil) the
spingle shaft but it dit not help.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mangesh

Could be a bad spindle motor? faulty laser alignment? bad laser? lots
of other possible faults.
At the very least you should TAKE your unit to a service shop for a repair
cost estimate so you can make an intelligent repair decision with facts
instead of internet and telephone guesses.

One possible problem is that the innards of the pickup may have accumulated
dust. You will need to use a can of compressed air to air blast the insides of
the pickup clean. Be careful when you do this, though. You can damage the
pickup.

Another thing you can do is to tweak the laser gain potentiometer on the pickup
itself. BE ADVISED, however, that this adjustment is optimally set at the
factory. Furhtermore, proper adjustment of the gain control requires a laser
power meter and the appropriate service literature to show you what ranges are
acceptable when doing the adjustment. ALSO, tweaking the potentiometer while
the pickup is powered could permanently damage the laser if the pot in question
is noisy.

It is also possible that the transmission ribbon that connects the optical
pickup to the player electronics may have developed breaks in the line(s),
resulting in intermittent contact. This is only if the pickup does use a
ribbon as opposed to a small wiring harness.

One of many common problems with the Aiwa CD shelf systems. - Reinhart

You mean you spun the disc by hand? Could be a spindle motor problem.

Yes. I spun the disc manually and it worked fine. When I stopped the
disc and replayed it, same problem again. But it works great once it
gets a little push.
I will go through the repair FAQ and other suggestions made by others
to this post.
Thanks.

Well, one thing you can try is to use bearing oil on the spindle motor sleeve
bearing. Use only a sparing amout, and use only oil that is meant to lubricate
electric motor bearings. Apply the oil at the point where the spindle shaft
goes into the motor housing through the sleeve.

DO NOT use stuff like WD-40 or Liquid Wrench to oil the bearing as they won't
last as a lubricant.

It is also possible that the motor may be on its way out, but a sticky bearing
is more likely to happen. - Reinhart

I think it's more likely the commutator is worn or dirty on the motor, a
sticky bearing usually will prevent the motor from reaching full speed.

That, too. Aiwa systems, as you already know, use those brush-type motors that
are usually made by Mabuchi. - Reinhart

Thanks Reinhart. I lubricated the motor and so far it seems to be
working. But I can see the motor is "tired" and is on it's way out.
Well, if the problem re-appears I know what to fix now. And yes it's a
Mabuchi motor (RF-310T-11400). Thanks for your help.
