Advantages of a differential vs. a single-ended receiver?

Hi All,

What are the advantages of a receiver with a differential input
versus one with a single-ended input? I know the noise immunity is
enhanced with differential, but is there also more sensitivity,
dynamic range, and/or IP3? If so, how much? Any other advantages for
having to put up with an added balun (for the receiver's single-ended
input filter)?

Thanks!

More dynamic range because the available amplitude doubles. Other than
that it's usually done for better noise immunity and less EMC issues.
They have better immunity to crosstalk too as well as noise of course.

Please be more vague in future.

Sorry Phil, but I don't supply *anything* to poor, sad, lonely trolls.

Thanks Joerg and Eeyore -- differential circuits have always been a

It must be nice for Phil, knowing that he is so much cleverer than the

I can't imagine how much nicer it would be for him if he could feel
himself more polite than the rest of the world in the same proportion,
mainly because my imagination isn't even up to the job of conceiving
Phil as ever being merely surly, as opposed to rabidly offensive.

Granting Phil's search skills. he probably couldn't find a closer

taller than Gert Wilders). Others could certainly do better.

In digital junk, differential has better signal fidelity. No ground
bounce issues.

One quick question: Do you have to use a single-ended input to begin with?

You can of course eliminate the balun if you start with a balanced antenna,
which is advantageous in that true balanced antennas tend to be less sensitive
to detuning/radiation pattern changes due to "proximity with people/random
objects" effects than something like a sleeve dipole is.

---Joel

Hi Joel,

Yes, that is a good idea, but unfortunately the input filter to the
receiver is single-ended (as will be the antenna (a chip-type)), so a
balun is needed into this darn differential receiver.

Thanks,

Well, my brand of socialism isn't all that far to the left by European
standards - I vote for the Dutch Labour Party (Partij van de Arbeid)
which is sufficiently middle of the road to be part of the current
governing coalition.

The more left-wing Socialist Party has got 25 respresentatives in the
Dutch lower house - not that manyfewer than the PvdA\, which has 33 -
but it isn't part of the governing coalition, and they have been known
to call the PvdA a bunch of fascists, but there are a couple of
parties further to the right.

I haven't been in Holland since the Rights are on the move...

The level of Holland dropped, IMO.
Maybe the ppl are still the same (uninquisitive and not argueing before
happening... a wonderful style which I like a lot! In Austria you are
firstly a criminal and then you get seized into anything the opponent
wishes to see you...) like before, when the Left Democrats vanished
from the show it became a bit Nazi like....
What I hear about Holland politically, was formerly, before the Right
activists, much better.

Daniel, in English it should be something like:

"What would interest me even more is learning what power attracts
normal people to even debate about such a flail-guy (?) as Phil is."

It would probably be different reasons for different people, and since
you've decided to join the debate, what would yours be?

There have always been right wing activists in the Netherlands - in
WW2 they produced more volunteers per head to fight with the SS
against the Russians than any of the other occupied countries - but
they are a despised (if vocal) minority. A few years ago the
psychopathic - if talented - Pim Fortuin demonstrated how you could
mobilise extreme right wing idiots into an electorate, before some
left-wing idiot made the tactical error of making his activities
respectable by shorting him dead. Since then Gert Wilders has tried to
step into his shoes, and the former (decidedly right wing) minister of
the interior - dissappointed at not getting to be leader of her long-
established political party, has decided to emulate Fortuin by setting
up yet another far right party.

None of them have any real political power nor any prospect of getting
any, but they do go out of their way to upset minorities as a
mechanism for getting themselves into the newspapers and on TV.
