My 3 year old G500 monitor has given up with a psu bleep bleep.
The HOT is OK and I can't see anything obvious cooked on the board or
bad joints.
Is there a known common fault on these that would point me in the right
direction, or possibly help with a schematic so I can prod about with a
scope.

You checked the horizontal out but what about the vertical out section?
It may be a shorted rectifier diode in the B+ or low voltage supply line.

.... You may be a tech if you're entertained by a 6-pack and sparking HV.
