Actual local Trader paper ad, very funny.

I snipped the phone number, but this is the actual ad. Someone selling a
broken console tv set as a stand for another tv, can you say hick-a-billy.
I am laughing so hard I have to go now.

Perhaps you are too young ever to have seen console TVs with doors. My
well-off friend Noah has one in mahogany (gutted) serving nicely as an
enclosure for stereo components, and with the doors closed, it's not
identifiable as ever having been a television.

And I have a beautiful old Zenith cabinet, the likes of
which you couldn't buy today serving as a side-bar (is that
the word>) in the dining room. Shelves inside for storage
of seldom used items, like the fancy tablecloths, linen
napkins, and so on.

Another friend who is a tropical fish fan has turned one
into a great fish tank (minus doors, of course)

I wish they still made furniture of real solid quality
woods - or at least that an ordinary fellow could afford :)

Take care.

I guess the original poster had never realized that TV cabinets were ever made
out of anything but plastic. :)

Not that surprising. I went to an Estate sale once where there was a 1950's
TV, now dead, with a 1960's TV on top of it (now dead), with a 1980's
portable TV on top of IT.

Well if you had a massive tv set that failed, wouldn't you put off moving it
outside as long as possible? Might as well put it to use.

I wanted to raise my monitor up a bit, so I slipped an early PowerMac under
there. The three inches or so is just about right.

Modern projections tv,s that are big have some pretty good looking
enclosers but when you go digging out the guts (by the way, huge
magnifiers of varieous functions in sets of three) the partical board
does not like to stressed. One went down like a house of cards after
the rain ( I know but the real wood still stands eventhough water
logged)
