Dick Smith used to sell a small coil they described as an activating
coil , part P7858. It is a simple coil wound on plastic with a 3 or 4 mm
hole in the centre.

On it says "Marble", MEL400.

Any one know where these or similar might be available??

TIA

** Sounds like you are after a reed relay drive coil - bit scarce
nowadays.

Altronics ( and others) see complete coil-relay units for under $ 4
each.

Cat S 4100A for 5 volt and S 4101A for 12 volt.

Woof, woof.

Not sure what you mean, if this is a xenon trigger transformer, Jaycar has a
useable one MM2520.

If you mean the coils that go around reed switches, Jaycar has a couple with
reed switches in the centre, SY4036 (5v coil), or, SY4038 (12v coil). If these
are what you're after, I suppose you can remove the reed switch if you need to.

Haven't been able to find any equivalents at DSE.

Looking at the DSE 93/94 catalogue, the description is:

Activating Coil
Matches perfectly the mini P-7856 reed switch. 430 ohm coil
operates from 6-15V DC. Gives perfect isolation between
two circuits.

RS have parts 349-838 and 349-844, with differing impedances.
$8.29 ea (ex GST)

Hmmmm... in 93/94 DSE also sold "V20-88MHz high performance 8088
replacement" chips for $19.95 ea.

Also, 4MB SIMM RAM for $399!!!!

Many thanks to all who replied. I was trying to make a low cost, low power
push pull solenoid using a rare earth magnet in a coil. It is to operate
stuff on a model railway.
The RS one does the trick pity it is so costly, the Jaycar one is a mite
too small
