Click on the picture that has three of them. Looks to me like the
square thing with the hole in the top is a metal heatsink, with the
transistor which is a cylindrical metal can is press fit into the hole
in the end. Or am I wrong? Is the square thing not metal? Is it a
part of the transistor?

The square thing is indeed metal, and the transistor is a TO1 type
cylendar, pressed into the block. It is NOT removable (under normal
circumstances)

It look to me exactly as you described it; metal barstock center drilled
part way, slit to make press fit, then cross drilled at one end for
mounting. Possibly only for mechanical mounting, but more likely thermal,
IMO.

I've never seen one like that. I've seen plenty of germaniums and
some have been in odd cases, but noner like that. Thanks.

p.s. I'll have to show the following to one of our bosses. His name
is John Didion, only one letter off!
