SWF == Sovereign Wealth Fund

Long, long, long over due:

A group of senators is considering a sovereign wealth fund (SWF) to prevent Social Security insolvency, Semafor reported.

A SWF is a government-backed investment fund, and its profits would be used to pay Social Security benefits.

If such a SWF failed to generate profits, the bipartisan group of senators are amenable toward tweaking payroll taxes.

They\'ve got everything right except the part about borrowing a trillion for the initial funding. Bad move. They should raise the money through a temporary SS tax rate increase- across the board incomes.

What a hilarious concept, a government program that creates profits.

Even better, adjust government policies to increase productivity and
create domestic jobs.

Look up \"Laffer Curve.\" And walk around and count the ratio of foreign
cars.

It doesn\'t have to create profits, it creates patronage and political
leverage on a huge scale. Having a SWF fund threaten to sell a big
chunk of their stock will bring most CEOs to heel very quickly. Who\'s
going to go after the Treasury or the SSA for antitrust violations?

It\'s also a way to smuggle in industrial policy on a huge scale, without
congressional oversight. No bueno.

Cheers

Yes, absolutely over due. SWF is for storing budget surplus for rich countries. We need to fix budget deficit in order to create SWF.

We need senators with economics educations.

That just makes things worse. We need less government.

That\'s kind of hysterical. The federal government already has several big funds that invest for profit in the global financial market, and no such abuses have occurred. Investment decisions must be made as with a blind trust type of arrangement, although I don\'t know that for sure. And the trillion dollar fund is a very small fraction of the totality of global investment, a small fraction of a per cent.

OK, one senator per state is enough. Why do we need two?

We need to be like Texas, allow Congress into session about a month
per year. And we need universal term limits in government.

Don\'t bother.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laffer_curve

\"The Laffer curve was popularized in the United States with policymakers following an afternoon meeting with Ford Administration officials Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld in 1974, in which Arthur Laffer reportedly sketched the curve on a napkin to illustrate his argument.\"

And recall that US manufacturers were very resistant to producing compact cars, and when they finally did. in reaction to competition from imported cars, they promptly started making them bigger and bigger. Something in the US education system seems to produce persistent and wide-spread brain damage.. John Larkin does seem to have suffered worse than most.

\"Senators also would serve six-year, [ staggered ] overlapping terms, creating continuity by allowing two-thirds of its members to remain from congress to congress. Longer terms, combined with a system of indirect election, would allow senators to resist the whims of public opinion.\"

\"Each senator is elected at-large in their state for a six-year term, with terms staggered, so every two years approximately one-third of the Senate is up for election.\"

A congress is two years. Elections held very even numbered year on designated election day.
