A source for top-quality batteries?

I am looking for a source for Ni-CD or metal nickel hydride batteries, for a
life-safety application. I get tons of emails from various Chinese
companies offering me their wares, but I have no idea who is good and who is
not. With some suppliers, we've had atrocious failure rates and as this is
a critical application, I really need to find the best quality manufacturer.

How does one find the best companies for batteries? Is there a particular
brand that is recognized to be the best?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Thanks for the advice--I'm getting some quotes asap.
I've seen chinese cells go into this with no provocation, up to 24 hours
after being charged.
It appears that there isn't enough excess plate capacity, and or catalyst,
so the cell sits there with unrecombined H2 and O2 under pressure. The vent
obviously didn't let it out, and so some time later the recombination
begins, and it's a rapidly accelerating event. On some cells, the end pops
and boiling electrolyte sprays out.

Not pretty.. But their spec sheets, and amp-hour capacity look great.

Further info:

On the suspect cells, the high rate (1C) charge temperature curve was more
or less linear.
On the good ones, the temperature remains low, and spikes at the end.

Well, that sucked. Looks like an old backup is in place.

Nice article. Regarding the "thermal runaway" -- I bet you'll
get lots of stories now -- as I've had that happen to me. These
cells were purchased from Thomas Distributing; I think the
labeled brand was 'nexus' or something like that. I had both
an AA cell with relatively few hours on it, and an AAA cell with
more cycles both immolate themselves. Not as hot as yours got,
but hot enough to melt off the labels. This was some time ago,
both cells have long gone to the battery recycler.

I haven't had this problem with the PowerEx (MAHA) brand.

Does the phrase "Spontaneous exothermal event" ring any bells?

Sanyo, panasonic, stick with reputable manufacturers.
