A Plea for HELP!!! :-)

Hello all:
I have a small problem with the heater blower in my pickup, I thought
someone here might be able to help, all help will be GREATLY
appreciated, it's a basic 12 volt 2 terminal blower fan in a '91 Nissan
pickup, The blower fan died along with the cig lighter, some problem at
the fuse block i think, i wired the fan direct(under a fuse) with an
on/off switch but naturally i have only high (full)speed, i'd like to
get a 3 position switch & add an inline resistor to one leg of it to
bring it to about 1/3 to 1/2 speed so i'd have a 2 speed fan, now i know
how to wire this up but have no idea what value/size etc. the resistor
would have to be, and i'll be the 1st to admit i know nothing about
resistors(other than i think i need one :) nor do i know how to figure
it by looking at a formula table!
Any ideas???(other than going to a garage or taking a course in basic
electronics :)
Many thanks in advance!!!

One comment - if you're unfamilliar with car electrics, I would not
recommend you try to do any rewiring yourself. This especially applies to
bypassing any fuses. This could easily result in a fire. You won't get
electrocuted with 12 volts, but the current can be high enough to start
fires.

Compared to an appliance such as a television, a car 12DC system is quite
simple. Even if you have a very basic idea of electrical wiring, a little
bit of reading should familliarise you with how car systems work. It would
also help if you had the circuit diagram for your car - one that has the
wiring colour codes. The thing is to do it SAFELY.

I would make sure that no fuse is blown (some fuses are outside the normal
fusebox). Check each fuse with a multimeter, as it may not be obvious it's
blown.

I would think it would be easier to repair the fault rather than redesign
the motor circuit. You should be able to locate the open circuit with a
cheap volt-meter. If you have the owner's manual, look for fuse locations.

Fix the problem with the truck. No doubt THAT will be easier than what you
propose to do.

IIRC, many Jap vehicles switch the negative side, and always supply 12V to
the motor. If you're losing the 12v, find out why. Probably a fuse or
relay. If you're losing ground, again find out why. It should be pretty
straight forward.

You may do well to visit your local library and pay 50 cents to photocopy
the wiring diagram out of a repair manual. Then you have something to work
with.

If you rig it, it will probably screw up. Then it will probably cost 10X as
much to get it fixed after the fact.

BTW - the answer to your original question is to locate the original
resistor network and simply use IT. Why reinvent the wheel?

These vechicals use a resistor block with 2 or 3 wire coil resistors .They are
usally located in the duct work around the blower motor they put them there
because they have to dissapated quit a bit of heat.It should be easy to find
the problem in the fuse block becase it will be on a 25 or 30 amp circuit..Just
trace the wiring out I know its not an easy job but beats freezing or burning a
wiring harness .Auto Zone has service manuals for under 20.00

A lot of the time the fan speed resistors are in the air stream to keep them
cool enough. I agree with the others - don't give up on finding the problem
yet. Don't forget that sometimes there are fuses & breakers under the hood
also.
