Yeh right! I had a look at it, thats one really dead site.

Trying to get people there....then it will be great

What have you got to offer that we don't already enjoy right here on
sci.electronics.* and abse wthout having to be under your thumb and
submit to ads, moderation, and username and password login?

Nothing, I'd say.

I'll be offering contests, and i'm moderating everything so far because
noone else has asked to moderate anything else, the ads you can ignore...i
don't force you to click on them, and you don't need a username and password
to view posts, only to post articles...that keeps out the spam ads which
newsgroups are FLOODED with all the time.

I'll be offering contests,
---
Circuit or software design contests, no doubt, with intellectual
rights to the design going to whom when the contest is over?
---

and i'm moderating everything so far because
noone else has asked to moderate anything else,
---
The bone of contention is that it's being moderated at all and I, for
one, won't become part of any "forum" where what I choose to write can
be changed or dismissed because it doesn't meet someone's idea of what
they think I should have said.
---

the ads you can ignore...i don't force you to click on them,
---
The point is that they're there, which makes your site commercial even
though you've gotten yourself a .org URL. Kinda cheesey. In my book,
anyway.
---

and you don't need a username and password
to view posts, only to post articles...that keeps out the spam ads which
newsgroups are FLOODED with all the time.
---
I don't need a username or a password to post here, and as far as the
SPAM goes, does it look we're flooded? Matter of fact, other than
yours, the only other SPAM in _weeks_, as I recall, was some other
idiot hawking tickets to Disney-something-or-other.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't really care what you do, (except it
would be nice if you'd bottom post. It's kind of a convention here and
it makes it a lot easier for everyone to follow since that way it's
chronologically ordered from top to bottom) I'm just putting in my
unmoderated two cents worth of comments.

Sure, great for you when you receive $$$ from paying advertisers. How about
you give us a percentage of that ;)

John --> For someone who doesn't care what he does, you sure are putting
up quite a fight. ;-)

Spaceman --> I personally didn't care for the site because the first
thing I saw was a post that had the subject "For women who want to
pierce their genitals...", which really gave me a unprofessional
impression ... even if it was just an amusing story. It stopped me cold
right there. If you are going to run an serious forum, I would get rid
of that kind of thing quick unless it relates somehow to electronics.

Even with the best intentions, it is very difficult to start a new forum
that will be popular. It's kind of like launching a competing auction
site against eBay... you may have a better site, but you won't get very
far... sellers know that eBay is where the buyers are. You might have
slightly better luck if you found a niche topic in electronics and
started a forum around it. For example, one Yahoo group I know caters to
the 'art' of taking toys and 'bending' them to make them do very
interesting things. If I remember right it has quite a good following.

As for moderation... I disagree that this forum (as well as almost any
other newsgroup) is free from moderation. It's just not done by one
person, but rather a small group of vocal enthusiasts.
For example, as a hard core top poster, I even bottom post in *this*
newsgroup. Why? It's because when you are in Rome, do as the Roman's
do...or the high priests will cut your head off, feed you to the lions
and put a curse your decedents! Besides, even though reading bottom
posted messages is tedious IMO, it is a lot more tedious to fend off the
religious arguments that follow (many examples of this will soon follow
this posting I'm sure). :-D
But seriously, no matter what the preference, keeping it one way or the
other does help the overall communication flow. In RGVAC (where I
usually do a good bit of posting), it is top posting that is the norm...
so I top post there. Most people bottom post here, so I try to do the
same.

Good luck with your endeavors.

If you're interested in contributing technically to this group why
don't you find some topic you feel you're qualified to discuss and
join in the discussion, or start a new on-topic topic you'd like to
discuss?

So far all you've done is pimp your web site and defend your position,
and now you're starting to get involved in flaming. _NOT_ a good
idea.

Nor is the spam he's now sending. First I got a test message, now
this:

Ok guys here's the problem. We have a site that has potential to be
good, however noone is showing up and posting anything worthwhile.
What we need is more users and more technical posts. Good posts
would be homework problems, technical issues related to EE, and just
general good discussions.

I would also like some feedback as to what would be some good
contests to run to get more people to the site.

One last item of business is the issue of moderators. It looks bad
for me to be the only one moderating ALL topics, so if anyone wants
to step up to the plate and help out, I'll be more than glad to bump
you up.
