1991 Curtis Mathes TV. Model: GT2760 Service: cmj2765w

Very Dark TV picture, on screen display looks good. Any ideas where to start

Start at the video detector, and work through the video amp stages. If the
signal looks low at the video detector, then work back through the IF to the
front end. Also verify the performance of the AGC circuits. The most basic
thing to start with, is to check is the power supply performance, and the
supply volts to the various stages along the signal paths.

You will require the proper test equipment, service manual, and training to
troubleshoot your set. I would suggest you give it out to the authorized
service rep for your set.

Be Advised, these were manufactured by NEC for Curtis Mathis. If the jungle
ic is in a socket, remove it, remove the socket from the main pcb, solder
the ic directly to the pcb. Also check associated capacitors in the power
supplies, video and screen bias circuits.

I've never seen a 1991 Curtis Mathes, but going by the service # cmj2765w, I'd
give odds it's a Zenith TV. If this is the case, probably has a dead picture
tube.

If the tube is bad, why does the on screen display look good?

OT but how long since there was a real C-M TV, not just something re-
badged? Did this name have a lot of cachet in some areas?

"Real" C-M is something of a misnomer, since they have always been built by
other makes and rebadged. What sold C-M was the famous 7 year warranty. They
had considerable cachet in many parts of the U.S., particularly among older
(wealthier) buyers.
