Hello Folks,
Long time lurker here. I just finished building a 6 digit Numitron clock
and if your interested, take a look at the webpage I created at
http://www.tuberadios.com/numitron

It was a fun project, next is a 6 tube VFD clock... I put together the
display board, you can take a look at http://www.tuberadios.com/vfd

I also built a 6 digit Nixie clock...

Very nice, sharp photos. Good depth of field and warm lighting.
The walnut case for the Numitron clock is a winner.

Now you've done it ..... I gotta scrounge around for the 7-seg. DIP
incandescent displays I bought back in the early 70's and do something
with 'em!

Mike,
Thanks for the compliments. It was a fun project. Have fun building your
clock, remember if you are going to multiplex the display, you need all of the
diodes soldered to each segment, if you are going the direct drive route, you
don't need them but will have a bunch more ic's.

Happy Holidays,
Sal

Sal,
All I can say is WOW! What a beautiful piece of work. The warm glow
of the digits reminds me of the HeathKit clock that had the neon
display.

Quick question. The 5314 chip is hard to come by. Where did you get
it? Where can it be purchased? Also, where does one by the display
tubes?

Thanks for the compliment,
The MM5314 is available for $19.99 at www.debco.com. There is another supplier
that sells it for $12.99 but I have to find that url. As far as the numitrons
go, thats a tough call. There are a few tube vendors that sell them but at a
high cost, I bought mine from ebay a few months ago. There are 10 on ebay
right now but I think they are going for $13.00 a piece. If you need any info,
let me know.

Thanks,
Sal

Sal, I have some two and three digit Beckman seven segment displays.
The three digit are SP-353, but I will have to check the part number on
the two digit type when I get back out to my shop. These were used in
gas pumps and pinball machines. I removed these from some National
Semiconductor cash registers.

Hi Mike,
I've seen the type of displays you are talking about, they glow like a neon nixie
tube and require about 160 volts to light up more or less
(http://www.datamath.org/Display/SP353.htm) . The numitrons I used are incadescent
and require 5 volts to light up. I just received 7 used numitrons in the mail today,
4 are good, 3 are bad. The tubes I used in my clock were NOS. There is a guy on
ebay selling a smaller version of the incadescent tubes for $5.00 a piece. I think
he has 900 of them to sell. If anyone wants to know his email address I can dig it
up.

Oh, my! No clock, thanks. I've got clocks falling off shelves all over
the place. I'll probably turn the DIP incandescent displays into an
indoor/outdoor thermometer for the bedroom. Which reminds me: I gotta a
go find those things!
