6-12V NiMh batteries

Hi guys,

I need a NiMh battery to power a 15W lamp. What would be a good 6.0, 7.2,
or 12V power source? I need about 4.5 amp hour (at 6.0V). What is the best
value for the dollar? Which is best laptop, rc, cell phone, camcorder, C
cells, etc?


Any input would be greatly appreciated

Have you looked at electric model car/truck/aircraft batteries, you can get
them in most voltages 6 cell 7.2v being most common. 2 packs of 3000mah
would suit well.

Then once you've chosen the most suitable pack... copy it and buy the
charger. Buy the seperate tagged cells for half the price at somewhere like
RS, Farnell, CPC (UK, anyway).

If you're looking for best value for the dollar, why have you narrowed your
choice to NiMH? They're an excellent choice for long-term cycling and light
weight, but they aren't so good in terms of capacity per dollar. Sealed
Lead-acid is still the winner there (although you're certainly at the
smaller end of the lead-acid scheme.)

AA NiMh batteries are cheap on eBay- $1 apiece or less for high capacity
2,000 mAh batteries. In your situation you'd need about 15 batteries, but
this may still be your least expensive method.

PS- NiMh AA batteries are 1.2 volts per cell, so you'd need 5 batteries in
series to get to 6v. You'd need three sets of five batteries to get to 4.5
amp-hours.
