32" HDTV--needs degaussing, or worse?

Yesterday I purchased a used, as-is Samsung TSL3293HF 32" DynaFlat HDTV
monitor for a very low price. The monitor's picture is basically
black-and-white except for a rainbow pattern emanating from the two top
corners; see

http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/lmayka@ameritech.net/detail?.dir=/3a5a&.dnm=8a62.jpg

Is the screen just severely magnetized, and it needs a strong professional
degaussing? Or do you think the problem is far worse?

I would say the Monitor has taken a fall
you could try manually deguassing but
I dont think it will do any good.

Looks to me like the mask is warped...

Take care.

I should point out that at normal color settings, the rainbow pattern is
basically red/green/blue with some changes (apparently based on the color of
what is being portrayed). At the very lowest color setting--which I had
hoped would result in pure black-and-white--a rainbow pattern still appears,
but the pattern is red/green/blue near the top corners and fans out to
cyan/magenta/yellow at the bottom of the screen.

So does it merely need a degaussing, or is the picture tube shot?

When you refer to a "fall," exactly what do you suggest may have been
broken?

This looks very much like a damaged CRT. Most likely this set has been
dropped! The mask in the CRT looks to be knocked out of its proper position.
It only takes a few thousandths of an inch of mask error to produce this
type of effect.

The shadow mask inside the CRT (Picture Tube). It will require a new CRT to
fix this set. Unfortunately the CRT may cost more than a new set.

I was going to suggest adding magnets to the corners...then I saw
the picture-bad tube all around!

The tube is toast; you DID say you bought it AS-IS didn't you? Why do you think
someone was selling an almost new HDTV "as-is"? Because it "is-broke".

Like fallen from where it was sitting...or droped.

The tube IS bad, there is zero doubt. Only a CRT replacement will fix this.
You might try to part it out on ebay.

It has been dropped. The shadow mask is completely damaged inside the
picture tube. Time for a new picture tube to repair the set. As I recall
from memory the picture tube for that tv costs authorized servicers right at
$850, then add the $100 or so labor for installation and alignments that are
required. Almost a $1000 repair.

I got a 32 in sony (cheap) with a similar problem. As suggested on the
forum, its probably a mask problem and needs a new tube. However, depending
on what you were planning on using the set for... in my case just basically
watching "ugly broadcast TV"... I was able to use some magnets taped to
sides to "help" the picture a bit... actually used an old car speaker which
has a pretty strong field but you could experiment a bit. It didn't
"totally" correct things but it did improve the "watchability" a bit. You
might have some success playing around with it like that.

Not on his set. Any picture tube with the ATARI pattern of color on it has
a totally dislodged shadow mask or broken loose aperature grille. It is not
even a case of it being warped, if it were warped it would simply be showing
the wrong color in large area of the screen. With it totally dislodged, it
will show the ATARI logo type of rainbow pattern.

Anyone around in the 80's in the US will know what the ATARI logo looked
like.

Which atari console we are talking about? Atari had all kinds of
consoles all the way from earilest one that is only one purpose or two
mode b/w consoles all the way to the late cartridge console.

Never had one but played on several while visiting their places years
ago when I was younger. :)

Cheers,

Wizard

Not talking about ANY specific console. The Atari trademark Logo.
It started out as a black and white logo. Later versions added multi colors
and a couple of extra bands.
