27" Sony, picture turned into "washboard" / pancakes

My kids were cycling the power on/off on our 27" Sony (built in '95)
when the picture suddenly turned into something that looks like a
washboard or a stack of pancakes. The screen is full, but has a bunch
of 1" jagged horizontal lines running across the screen from top to bottom.

I'm not an electronics guru, but my guess is this has something to do
with the horizontal hold.

Any possible suggestions on what "blew" and what I might be looking at
in terms of repair costs?

Thanks in advance.

No way to know without taking it to a shop for a diagnosis, probably
somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 though. Modern TV's don't have
horizontal hold as it's all controlled by a microprocessor, but a number of
other things could have happened. Rapid power cycling is not good for
electronics.

I phoned one shop and they too suggested the uP. The tech suggested
that this would cost under $100. It's worth reparing if this is the case.

Why not unplug the tv set for an hour to make sure the soft settings are all
reset in the tv and see if that works? Before taking it into the shop.

Good suggestion. I'll try that.

Out of curiosity, do these sets keep any settings in non-volatile (e.g.
FLASH) memory? I'm thinking of things such as channels which are marked
as deleted etc.
