21" SONY TV makes horrible rumble and growl when turned on

Every time I turn it on it makes a horrible loud buzz/growl/rumble
sound for 1/2 second, screen stays black an additional 3 seconds when
the growling stops, then it comes on and works perfectly for hours on
end, until I have to turn it on again. I noticed just now that when I
had my computer monitor plugged into the same power strip, the
growling was accompanied by my computer monitor getting the life
sucked out of it for 3 seconds while my TV did it's weird little
routine. Is my TV going to blow up some day and kill me, or is this
probably nothing to worry about. It is about a 10 year old TV I think,
very heavy and huge. Any advice would be appreciated.

I would strongly believe you are hearing the degaussing coil. Most likely
the metal shroud that is the shield for the CRT is resonating with the
degaussing coil during the degaussing period. As the set is aging, things
can also be loosening up a bit (speculation here...).

You should not share the same AC bar on a TV set and a computer. The TV set,
when starting up takes a lot of power for the degaussing coil, and the kick
start for the horizontal output stage and main power supply.

I like the way your describe the events here! Good choice of words.

Sounds like your normal degaussing noise. Sony sets almost always have noisy
degaussing.

I won't bother with describing what it is since it has been explained already.
All I can say is that your TV set is probably working properly and safely. The
noise is no cause for concern.

While there are ways to minimize the noise, as suggested by one of the posters,
it's still not a problem. Rather, it's more of a nuisance to some people.

As for me, I actually like the noise when I turn my Sony TV on!
