1991 Rca Bigscreen Tv Red Haloish Corners

Hello,

I have a 1991 RCA big screen tv that has a problem, the best way to describe it is that the center of the screen in a circle is fine yet the outer edges of that circle and all 4 corners have a red tinge to them. Even when I adjust convergence and in the video setup menu drop ALL color out of the picture on the tv I STILL have these reddish edges, its not terrible but its not fun to watch either.....

Just wondering, does this sound like an adjustment to the lenses or some mechanical internal thing, I don't wanna blow a big wad of money on this having a guy come out to tell me it cant be adjusted and that a part is bad and they cant get it anymore or something....

Just looking for insight as to what it maybe from someone who might have some experience in these older big screens...

The tv is a

MODEL P46159WK
CHASSIS CTC169BTA
Manufactured in September 1991

and I carefully cleaned the mirror and lenses (they all seem firm no play or movement to them) they were VERY dirty, now when I look down inside them I still see all sorts of spots yet I don't know how to get down IN there so I guess just cleaning the surfaces and the mirror will have to do for now....

May want to take the lens assemblies physically off the front of the crts and clean any debris from the front of the crts. See if that does any good. The complete chassis can be slid out of the back of the cabinet, remove black covering around the lens to access the mounts. The rest is academic. This failing to resolve your problem you may be seeing the actual weakening of the crts causing the red halo effect.

Pull the light box and look directly into the CRTs as it's running. All three
should have crystal clear pictures. Although uncommon, I've seen older RCAs
with coolant going bad and have done several this year.

when i turn the tv on and look down into the lenses (cleaned surfaces of
them) but deep inside all i see is spots everywhere on all 3, I am afraid
money wise it probably isnt worth fixing in general, maybe i will attempt to
get in there and clean those deeper into the lens area yet the red halo is
probably just gonna get worse over time till I dump the tv i guess.....was
just hoping it might be an adjustment issue..

It sounds very much like you have bacteria growing in the coolant.

Those three lenses you look down into are attached to CRTs. Picture Tubes. In a projection set, they run hot and need to have a mineral oil like coolant to keep things at normal temperatures. As these sets age, the coolant will usually get cloudy and grow goop in the coolant. You'll also get a film of sludge on the face of the CRT. There are a lot of years on those tubes and no doubt hey are weak. But if the picture in the center of the screen is still converged fairly well and is bright and colorful enough to satisfy you, it would be worth it to change the coolant and get a few more years of life out of the set.

Be warned that removing the wrong screws will release the fish-eye looking lense and you will spill coolant everywhere and essentially ruin the set. You almost need to have the skills to remove each CRT from the lightbox (disconnecting HV leads, yoke cables, etc) and then removing the lense assembly to clean the coolant out and wipe down the face of the CRT. It CAN be done by tilting the entire lightbox forward, propping it up, and then catchng the coolant in a small bucket/bowl/etc, but it's tricky. I have done this on a CTC195B lightbox from my 1996 model 52" RCA set I bought for $200.00 as broken. With a little convergance touchup (Thank god for Digital convergance) it has a picture that rivals brand new low/mid grade sets I've seen for sale.

If you deem yourself as the handy type and are familiar/comfortable with high-voltage items, you should be able to do this yourself and justify the cost of your time and the coolant. Otherwise, calling in a tech to handle the coolant change will start to bring the price up to the point that it's not really worth spending on that old of a TV set.

Have fun,
-Steve

What is your location? If you decide to ditch the set and you happen to be near Fort Worth, Texas, let me know. I have a spare CTC195 lightbox that works and I'd like your old cabinet/screen etc to make an extra set!

I'll haul it away.
