12VDC to 19VDC

Hi
There is no Laptop facility in my car only a 12v spare lead. I was wondering
if someone knows a reasonably simple way to up this to 19v as I have a friend
who can wire things up (without to many bangs).

try to seek on step up converters....

some just ned a coil.. but i guess you nedd about 2,5 A so maybe not easy to
find one that can hadle that much without external switch transistor

You need a switching DC-DC voltage converter. There are many available.

Search on "DC DC voltage converter" on the web.

I think it is TravelMate who make these. . the problem is, I need both arms
and legs to use a laptop and after you buy one, you'll only have one of
each.

They are very much over priced obo the number of components they contain. I
paid about AU$160. ACER have these rebranded, I think. They plug into the
cigarette lighter. Should be easy to build if you are into electronics?

Since it is a laptop, it's likely that it draws a fair amount of
current. Normally, you pretty much buy a car adapter from the
laptop company or one of their dealers. It's not worth risking
your laptop, as a rule, with borrowing a design from some other
purpose or doing your own unless you are pretty adept at this.

Just found it from google, so no idea if they are a good place
to shop. You should be able to find a great many of these shops
through google, using searches such as

car adapter laptop|laptops

for example. Also, you might add in keywords like
'schematic|schematics' or 'dc' or 'dc-dc' or 'homebuilt' into
the list to refine it for usable schematics.

The laptop typically needs 19 volts at 3 amps or more. That's more than 60
watts delivered power- and it needs output voltage regulation, input and output
filtering, and overcurrent, overvoltage, and overheat protection.

Don't forget that "12 volt" automobile power is only nominally 12 volts. It can
drop to less than 10 volts during starting and rise to 16 volts during charging
(depending on a number of factors).
